The weather on Curaçao

In the tropical zone, only 12 degrees north of the equator and outside the hurricane belt, Curaçao has a warm and yearround sunny climate with daily highs between 29-32° Celsius.

Curaçao has, other then many other tropical destinations, many months without rain of any importance. This makes a stay on this island a very comfortable one because you can rely on the weather. Most days are very sunny but days without a single cloud are rare; scattered clouds are the most common type of weather.

What makes stay really comfortable, is the constantly breezing tradewind from the east/north east.
This wind is year round the most important reason why many people like this part of the Caribbean. Only during fall (September/October) the wind may drop and it can feel hot then.

Average rainfall is about 570 mm (22 inches) a year. It is outside the hurricane belt, but Caribbean cyclones can cause some days of overcast and rain sometimes.

Seasons

Curaçao has two climatical seasons: the dry season (March to September, when you can expect many sunfilled days and a gentle breezing trade wind) and what they call the ‘wet season’ which lasts from October to February.
In this time of the year you have many sunny days but a shower can occur during the night or the end of the afternoon. Showers don’t last for more than a few minutes, but can be heavy sometimes. Days without sun are rare.
In the ‘wet season’ some roads may be closed after rainfall.

Diving and snorkelling

You can dive and snorkel year round; water temperatures vary from 26°C in Februari to 32°C in September, so always warm enough.

Visibility is best from January until May (about 30 meters is normal), slightly less in the other months when much plankton is in the water (visibility is 15-20 meters then). Still, many divers visit Curaçao in this time of the year because of the yearly ‘coral spawning’ which is sensational to see during a night dive.
